Classic films are usually shown on alternate Thursday afternoons. Films start at 2.30pm unless stated otherwise. All Suburb residents are most welcome. Entry: £1 for Fellowship Members, £3 for non members. Complimentary tea and biscuits are included.

‘Gaslight’
This classic 1944 film directed by George Cukor and starring Ingrid Bergman at the start of her career, with Joseph Cotton, Charles Boyer and Angela Lansbury follows the story of a young woman whose husband slowly manipulates her into believing she is descending into insanity. It won many awards at the time and the term “gaslighting” probably derived from this story.

‘Quartet’
Life-long friends Wilf and Reggie, together with former colleagues are residents of Beecham House, a home for retired musicians. A star cast who are the residents combine to put on a concert to raise money for the home. This is a joyous and entertaining film about redefining old age.

‘Girl With The Pearl Earring’
2003 film of the Tracy Chevalier book. Scarlett Johansson stars as Griet, a young 17th century servant in the household of Dutch painter Vermeer (Colin Firth) at the time he was painting the girl with the pearl earring in the city of Delft.

‘Enid’
Film of the life of Enid Blyton played by Helen Bonham Carter. originally a TV fim on BBC 4 so there are no subtitles. The film explores how the orderly, reassuringly clearworlds she creayes within her stories contrasted with the complexity of her own personal life.

‘The Seventh Veil’
Classic 1945 film exploring the depths of the mind. Story of a girl who develops into a concert pianist (Ann Todd), escapes from her hospital room after a car crash and tries to commit suicide. Rescued, she is treated in hospital by psychologist Dr Larsen (Herbert Lom) who discovers a traumatic relationship with her dominating guardian, superbly played by James Mason. A brilliant film but, sorry, no subtitles.

‘The Theory of Everything’
The story of the life of Stephen Hawking played byEddie Redmayne. Once a healthy young man at university, he receives an earthshattering diagnosis at 21 years of age just as he falls in lovewith fellow student Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones). An amazing film.
